Abstract

MALDI-TOF MS is a high throughput and reliable method for the classification and identification of microorganisms (Holland et al. 1996; van Baar 2000; Fenselau and Demirev 2001). Applications are feasible in clinical routine monitoring,
environmental and taxonomical research, or food processing quality control. The robust method requires minimal sample preparation efforts and life cycle costs. The Ready-to-Go Database together with easy walk-up analysis software allows unambiguous identification of thousands of bacteria, yeast and fungi. Moreover, the reference library is open, expandable and continuously growing.
